Donut walls have been all the rage in recent years for parties, showers, and almost any festive occasion. I've been eager to try making one myself because they are so darn adorable, aaaand I had some questions. For example - how practical is this for serving a crowd? How hard is it to build one? How do the donuts stay fresh?

This year I had the opportunity to make a donut pegboard for HGTV's wedding DIY's (as seen in this gallery, picture 41/60). It was so much fun and easier than I expected. Recently, after baking up some mini bundt cakes in a fancy pan, it struck me how beautiful they'd be displayed on a wall. I decided then to make a hanging mini bundt cake bar for our workshop Friendsgiving.

The Recipes!
All of the recipes we used are tried-and-true favorites from previous blog posts here on Sprinkle Bakes. Most of the recipes were left unfrosted and unadorned so guests could customize their own flavors from a tableful of delicious toppings. We used four recipes for a nice variation of colors and flavors, and they are linked below.

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bundt Cake with Spiced Candied Walnuts - this recipe for one large bundt cake was divvied up into mini bundt pans. Adjusted bake time is approximately 40 minutes. Prep the cream cheese frosting and walnuts in separate bowls and place them on the toppings table.

Baby Chocolate Bundt Cakes - these were made exactly as written in the recipe, including the ganache coating which firms up nicely and makes the bundt cakes extra-sturdy.

Olive Oil Jalapeno Cornmeal Cake - this recipe is for one large bundt cake, but it bakes up beautifully in mini pans. Bake time is about 30 minutes. Omit the soaking syrup step.

Banana Nut Muffins - this was an experiment that went well! I baked my favorite banana nut muffin batter in mini bundt pans and they turned out really pretty! Bake time is 20-25 minutes.

We had a designated toppings table, which was where the mini bundts were plated and dressed after they were selected from the hanging pegboard.

Toppings included freshly whipped cream, dulce de leche, pepitas, fruit preserves, cream cheese glaze, fresh berries, walnuts and pecans.

If you're not inclined to make your own hanging bundt bar, then they'll serve just as well piled high on pretty serving trays.

Oh, yeah! There's an introduction that needs to be made! Meet Cashew. He's the hopeful looking guy in the lower left hand corner. We adopted him last month and you can read more about his story in this Instagram post. He was very excited about the bundt bar, even though he didn't get to eat any cake. However, he did LICK a pumpkin bundt on the bottom row (facepalm).

Pro tip: Pet owners, hang your pegboards high!

For best results, have the bundt cakes sealed in air-tight containers and hang them on pegs about 15 minutes before dessert service. This ensures they'll be fresh and tasty. I used two Nordic Ware mini bundt pans, which conveniently bakes six cakes at a time: Geo Bundtlette Pan and Heritage Bundlette Pan.

This was such a sweet feast! All of the recipes together made about 46 bundt cakes, which allowed guests to take plenty of leftovers home. We all enjoyed our fill with many cups of strong coffee.

A mini bundt cake board is a great way to serve a crowd with lots of eye appeal - I hope you've enjoyed seeing ours!

  1. Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up.
The words in your content seem to be running off the
screen in Opera. I'm not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I'd post to let you know.
The design look great though! Hope you get the issue fixed soon. Kudos

  2. I used a Nordic Wear bundtlette pan. Sadly, the cakes adhered to the pans despite diligent coating. I have just enough batter for a sad, one layer 9" round to take to dinner. Le sigh. I need bundt 101.

    1. Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. I wonder what happened? I can usually rely on flour based baking spray. Is that what you coated with?
