A Holiday Tablescape with Tartan and Pine

I’m sharing something a little bit different today, and it’s something I love doing – decorating the holiday table! I’ll admit that it takes me a while to figure out what I like, so I start thinking about elements for my December table when November arrives. I find that planning this early is a real time-saver during my busiest month!

I definitely have a split personality when it comes to decorating. I chose bright, modern elements for the baking workshop, but inside the main house, where I host dinner guests,  I lean toward a more traditional look. And I don’t think there’s anything that says ‘Christmas tradition’ more than the combination of pine and tartan!

I enjoy picking out beautiful seasonal centerpieces, and I really adore these Mixed Pine Candelabrums from Nearly Natural. They are SO LUSH, and they really do look like freshly cut pine. The little birdcages with finials are so charming. Best of all, they’ll stay beautiful all December long – and beyond!

While I practiced setting the table, Biscuit practiced his dinner etiquette. He was very well-mannered around those mini bundt cakes – good boy, B!

I found the red tartan table runners on a trip to Home Goods, and the table is set with a combination of Noritake and Lenox china.

Our dinner table is long with a low-hanging light fixture in the center, so it can be difficult to find a centerpiece that is the right size and shape. I wanted something full and beautiful, but it had to be low, not only because of the lighting, but also because I like dinner guests to be able to see each other across the tableTwo of the pine candelabrums were a perfect fit!

Stay tuned for those little Rum Bundt Cakes with Cinnamon Hard Sauce. The recipe will be making an appearance on the blog soon!

I almost stuck red berry sprays in the greenery, but I felt it took away from the natural beauty of the pine. There are gorgeous little pine cones peeking out of the pine here and there, which was enough for me. Sometimes simple is best.

Hi Peggie! I've added a horizontal picture at the bottom of the blog post for clarity(luckily most of what I shot was still staged in my dining room!). As I mentioned in the post, my dining table is long and I haven't quite figured out how to get all of it into the camera's frame. I hope you'll find the picture I added helpful. There's a tall silver tiered dessert server on the far right that you can't see, but you can see it in previous pictures.

Have you been sneaking peeks in my computers? Have you been checking on what catalogues I receive or checking on the decorations I already have? I was SHOCKED when I opened the email and saw the theme of the tablescape. It couldn't have been more perfect for me if I chose it myself. And whats even more surprising, at least among people I know, this classic style is not all that popular. My friends and family who really know me well will see things like this and say "that looks like Pam" or "That is Aunt Pam all over" and… Read more »

Hi Pam! Thank you so much for the kind words. I bet your home is filled with beautiful classic decor. Having a home that is over 200 years old is something special! I'm glad to hear you love tartan and pine too!

Thanks for your comment – I enjoy hearing from you (although I don't always have a chance to respond properly!). Hope your holidays are happy this year!

Can't go wrong with tartans for the holiday, especially a season red pattern. Agree it would be nice to see a photo of the entire table.
