Glittering Pretzel Wands

Glittering Pretzel Wands

I’ve been making these salty-sweet pretzel sticks for years. Now that I think about it, I’ve been making them for more than a decade! When I worked an office job years go I remember placing a huge tray of these in our break room. About two hours later they were all gone – all except the stick-ends of a few pretzels. Someone had eaten the candy-covered part and left the remaining pretzel sticks on the candy tray – who does that?!  (So funny!)

My favorite part about making these is choosing which sprinkles to use (no surprise there!). I was particularly inspired by an icy blue color palette of  blue crystal sugar, silver dragees and Swedish pearl sugar. I think these would be right at home at a ‘Frozen’ party, if you happen to have little ones who love the movie.

Glittering Pretzel Wands

This recipe makes a whole bunch of pretzel wands (24 or more!) so dip until your heart’s content! I have a favorite brand of pretzel rods for this treat – Snyder’s of Hanover (nobody’s paying me to say that, I really do love them). You can find them at almost any US grocery store. They are sturdy and hold up well during transport or shipping. They taste good, too!

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces block or bar white chocolate or white candy coating almond bark, finely chopped
  • 24 large pretzel rods I like Snyder’s of Hanover brand
  • Assorted sparkling holiday sprinkles
  • * I used crystal sugar, dragees and Swedish pearl sugar among others

Instructions

  • Cover a work surface with waxed paper or parchment paper. Place an 8-inch or larger paper plate (or other plate) nearby.
  • Place the white chocolate or candy coating in a microwave-safe bowl; heat at 100% power in 30 second intervals. Remove and stir with a rubber spatula between cook times. The candy should melt while you are stirring after about 1 minute total cook time. If lumps remain, then heat again for 30 seconds and stir until smooth.
  • Transfer the melted candy to a tall drinking glass or plastic tumbler (disposable red Solo cups are perfect for this!). Dip one pretzel rod into the melted candy and hold it above the glass. Twist the rod to let the excess chocolate drip off. Hold the rod over a paper plate and shake sprinkles on all sides. Place the pretzel on the wax paper to dry. Repeat with remaining pretzel rods. Allow to dry completely, about 3 hours or until the candy is dry to the touch. You may also transfer them to the refrigerator to speed setting.
  • Package six pretzel rods in each of four bags and tie with holiday ribbon for 4 gifts. For a larger gift, package a whole batch in a large, tall air-tight cookie tin.

Hi Mary – yes absolutely! They also keep pretty well at room temperature if you store them in an airtight container. You can make them up to two weeks ahead of time. Moisture is the enemy of crisp pretzel sticks, so if you freeze them just be sure they are double wrapped and placed in freezer bags.

And if you can't freeze them, how long would you say the shelf life is? Thanks!!
