One year seems to have flown by, and in another sense it feels as if I've been blogging about sweet confections for... well, forever! One might say that it's easy to savor life when you measure your year in desserts.
I knew that the Sprinkle Bakes birthday cake could be no less than sprinkle encrusted. It's even sprinkled on the inside! For several years I've requested a Funfetti cake for my birthday, but now I've worked out a recipe for a scratch made version. It is made with buttermilk, so it's extra moist and not overly sweet - but you couldn't tell from looking at it. It's a visual sugar rush!

"A casserole made for special occasions or year round use. The perfect size for baking potatoes or soufflés. Enameled cast iron heats quickly and retains heat beautifully. Limited lifetime warranty."
* Can be used in the oven or on the stovetop
*Enameled cast iron efficiently conducts and retains heat
*Heavy, tight-fitting lid; knob on lid is ovenproof to 450 degrees F
*Holds 2 quarts
Also, 12 of you will get a special baked treat delivered to your doorstep! I wish I could tell you exactly what it is, but I will say that the recipe comes from my baking book that is due out next fall. So, consider it a sneak peek at things to come!
(Contest entry form is at the bottom of this post.)
To keep the mood festive, I've made birthday hats for the guests. They do not love this idea.
Have you seen these enormous gummy bears yet? I laughed when I first saw them and said "Who on earth would buy that?!"...ahem.

Sprinkle Bakes' Sprinkle Cake [click for printable recipe]
Serves 12-15
Sprinkle Cake:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla
3 eggs
3/4 cup rainbow sprinkles (I like the Marble Mix'ins variety found in the ice cream section)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease the bottom and sides of two 9" (or three 8") pans and line with parchment paper. Grease parchment and set aside.
In an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat all ingredients together except rainbow sprinkles. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes, scraping down the bowl occasionally. When thoroughly mixed, gently fold in rainbow sprinkles. Stir only briefly, because the colors will begin to run quickly.
Pour batter evenly into pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool on wire racks.
Italian Buttercream Frosting:
2 cups sugar
2/3 cup water
4 large egg whites
6 sticks of softened butter (yes, 6 sticks!)
1 teaspoon vanilla
In a small saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in the water. Stirring constantly, bring mixture to a boil and cook until 240 degrees is reached on a candy thermometer.
In the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment, beat the egg whites until they are foamy. While mixer is running, add the hot sugar syrup to the egg whites in a thin stream. Temper the mixture slowly and carefully.
Switch whisk attachment for the paddle attachment, and add the softened butter, 1 tablespoon at a time. Frost cooled cakes with buttercream.
Assembly:
A variety of nonpareils, sprinkles, quins, sugar confetti and anything else you want to throw at this cake. Sprinkle to your heart's content!
THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED!
Contest Rules
To enter, you must be a follower or become a follower of Sprinkle Bakes. Leave your name and email address in the form below. Also, leave a comment and tell me about your favorite birthday cake! My favorite was a Mrs. PacMan cake that was made for my 9th Birthday. I still love looking at pictures of that cake!
The deadline is October 6th and a winner will be chosen and announced October 7th.
A little fine print for this contest:
Contest is open to US and Canadian residents only. Email addresses are kept confidential. Winner will be selected by Sprinkle Bakes using Random.org. Winner will be notified via email and will have 24 hours to confirm receipt of the email. If the winner does not reply within 24 hours, another winner will be selected.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 379 of 379 Newer› Newest»My favorite cake was one that I shared with my uncle. See we share the same birthday, and he lives a few states away. One summer when I was young, I flew out there during the summer and we shared a cake. I guess that's why I like a white layer cake with a bit of cinnamon in it. It's about the memory. :) P.S. Didn't know giant gummy bears existed...how did I miss that?
How fun! My favorite birthday cake wasn't mine, but my father's 45th birthday cake. My mother's coworker decorates cakes on the side and designed an awesome Red Sox cake for my dad with cake-man at bat and a giant baseball in the middle of the field. Not to mention, the vanilla buttercream was out of this world.
This is going to sound really sad, but I don't remember ever having a birthday cake. I sure there must have been one but I can't remember.
I like to make my own birthday cake - a great gift of uninterrupted time to bake something that I love. I'm still searching for my perfect birthday cake, though. I think something lemony and light for next year. As for birthday cakes that I've had - I like vanilla cake with excellent buttercream icing and some sort of fruit filling. Mmmm.....
My favorite birthday cake is the same one my mom makes for me every year. It's a confetti angel food cake. So delicious!
I don't know if this counts but when I was little my grandma would always make my sister and I heart shaped cakes out of Duncan Hines yellow cake mix. We didn't have a lot of money growing up and baking wasn't really my grandmas forte. Occasionally I'll make the same boxed cake mix and think of my granny. To me, nothing will beat the taste that warms the heart :)
That is one beautiful cake!!!!! So pretty! My favorite cake is carrot or anything with lots of spice!
Happy blogoversary!
My favorite birthday cake is not really cake. It's a berry trifle that my mom makes every year and is delicious!
My Best Friend (since childhood) baked me a Lemon Raspberry cake for my Birthday about four years ago before I moved out of state. I think the ones baked with love and from someone special are the most delicious.
my favourite birthday cake since i was about 10 has been a simple lemon poppyseed cake with a lemon glaze. my mum makes one every year for me, no matter where i am. when i was at university across the country she would bake one and mail it to me so that i wouldn't miss out. yum!
Following you!
My favorite birthday cake wasn't really mine, this year I made the best cake for my boys' birthday party! It was a circus tent cake, and it tasted as good as it looked!
Kat W. - My favorite birthday cake was actually one I made for my boyfriend at the time. I was a round cake decorated with a brontosaurus in a field of flowers with pterodactyls fling around. Maybe not the most masculine cake with the flowers but I loved it and loved how much he loved it. And, of COURSE, it was a funfetti cake! :)
My favorite birthday cake inspired me to be a professional baker. It was made by my aunt (because my mom was a TERRIBLE baker) and it was one of those doll-shaped cake that looked like Holly Hobby--all filled in with icing stars to look like her dress....heavenly. I have no idea what the flavor was. It didn't even matter.
My Favorite birthday cake is the one my mother makes for me every year. It's not a traditional cheese cake, its a chocolate mousse with a graham bottom. My father and brother dont fancy it so my mom would make them their own devil's food chocolate cake. My mom is the best mom in the whole world. Everyone wins!!!! I love you mom!
Thank you so much for letting us all share such a memorable thing. :)
My favorite birthday cake was a Walnut Buttercream Cake. It was for my 12th birthday but, I can still remember how good it looked, tasted and smelled.
My favorite cake by far was once my mother made for me as a girl :)
It's a simple sponge cake with sweetened whipped cream and strawberries. So light, I could eat the whole thing!!!
Your cake is gorgeous though! Love the colors on it!! <3
Love your cake!! also, love the star shaped sprinkles. My all time favorite birthday cake is Red Velvet.
My favorite cake was the raspberry jelly-roll cakes my grandma Susie made. I didn't realize how special they truly were till after she was gone!
my favorite birthday cake was a caramel cheesecake with a brownie crust. sooooo good! but bad enough for you that I only got it once a year :)
My favorite cake, has to be hands down, my mother's moist dark chocolate cake with ganache and a raspberry filling that she makes for my birthday....yum. I just love your blog, I became a follower just this yr...and wishing you many more baking adventures :)
My favorite Birthday Cake is a white cake. When I was younger, our local bakery would make additional batter when making a wedding cake and use that for my birthday cake. Hope someone ordered my white cake, since tomorrow is my birthday.
My Mom was never one to overly decorate any cakes or cupcakes (that's where I came in), but one year for my birthday, she made me little mouse cupcakes. They were complete with black licorice whiskers and little pink gummy noses. I felt so special that she had done that for me! I think it also kick started the creative wheel in my head! There is something very special about these types of memories and sharing them with others! What a great birthday :)
My favorite birthday cake was a pink heart shaped cake my mom made with red sprinkles... Appropriate for my Valentine Birthday... I purchased a heart shape pan the first time I saw one as an adult out of nostalgia. Now I bake heart shape cakes for my daughters. :-)
My mom is an awesome baker, and she's made so many great birthday cakes it's hard for me to choose one! When I was maybe eight, she made a sheet cake but decorated it with a model of our patio and put little sugar figures of me and my friends in the pool.. That one was so cool. She also made me a red velvet cake this year, which is probably my favorite because I seriously love red velvet. :)
My favorite birthday cake was actually store bought...but ONLY because it was my Golden birthday, I made a HUGE deal out of it, and my dear hubby went to the store to request the most golden cake they could give him. They frosted a vanilla cake in an OBNOXIOUS deep yellow color with bright green flowers. The cake tasted horrible, but the love and thoughtfulness behind it was wonderful! I also just had to laugh at how hideous it was :) :)
My favorite cake has got to be Mocha with coconut and a butter cream
My favorite birthday cake is the last one I made- cold oven pound cake in a sheet pan with "that's the best frosting I ever had" from Tasty Kitchen. It was so good I grieved when it was gone.
My favorite cake is chocolate. I love chocolate.. I think this year I will make myself a mocha chocolate cake with ganache frosting..
Chocolate cake/chocolate frosting....A combination so rich that it is worth eating and not regretting!!!!! (What a way to celebrate another year older)
My favorite birthday cakes are always the ones I make for friends and family. I love creating something delicious and unique to the person. You can't have a real birthday without some sort of cake and I love knowing that my friends will always have one perfect for them.
I follow you on my Google Reader account, every single time you update! My favorite birthday cake was a carrot cake my mom made for me on my 21st. Best. Cake. Ever.
My favorite birthday cake was the dark chocolate cheesecake I made for husband's birthday a few years.
My favorite cake was a Cabbage Patch cake with my face on the doll....OR maybe it was my Darth Vader cake in 4th grade?!! Either way my grandmother,"ma",made all of my cakes growing up and I loved each and every one of them b/c she made it such a big deal for us:)
Best birthday cake was the red velvet rubber ducky cake my Mom made me when I was in my 20s. I love rubber ducks, but the cake was too tall to fit in the cake taker, so, at my sister's suggestion, she cut off the head, piped blue "X"s over the eyes, and set it aside the body. If you remember Meanie Babies, there was one called "Donnie Didn't Duck". That became the inspiration for the cake, and it has been my favorite ever since!
My favorite bday cake was probably a homemade caramel cake my mom made. She was a great cook, a wonderful baker, and had a smile that melted my heart. I miss her!!!!!!!!
my favorite birthday cake was from a bakery in my home town: a vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting yummm
My favorite birthday cake has to be the german black forest cake :) with real cheries soaked in cherry brandy and freshly whipped cream :D
Every year for as long as I can remember we had a Carvel brand ice cream cake for my birthday and for all teh birthdays in my family for that matter. So, while it may not taste teh best it certainly brings back that childhood birthday feeling
Happy Birthday Sprinkle Bakes! I have been reading your blog now for quit some time, and let me tell you, that you are one Talented Baker!!! You are so amazing! Now, my favorite birthday cake would be a chocolate eclair cake that my Mother loved baking for me on my special day.. Was so delish!!!!

that cake looks beautiful!
we didn't get many birthday cakes when i was a kid, usually ice cream cakes from dairy queen if anything.
but i made this tasty chocolate layer cake from scharffenberger's recipes for my brother in law's birthday last month. it went over very well!
My favorite is my homemade Devils Food Cake with a dark chocolate ganache.
My favorite birthday cake memory was when I was young my Mom made a Strawberry Shortcake themed cake and piped it completely in frosting stars, now that I decorate cakes myself I realize how much work she really put into it-makes it extra special now.
As an adult my absolute fav is Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting!
My favorite birthday cake was the heart shaped rice crispie cake my mum made for me on my fourth birthday! Its never been matched!
Look at that cake...it's a TOTAL party cake - we love it! Our favorite birthday cake has to be our mom's chocolate chip cake with chocolate frosting...she made it every single year in the shape of whatever age we were turning...!
My mom made a sleepover birthday cake one year with devil dogs for the bodies and candy heads. She also made a carousel cake that was absolutely AMAZING. It was one of the coolest cakes to look at. I love the pictures from both of them.
Your blog is awesome! I love looking at your creations. =)
What a great contest! I also posted a link on EdibleCrafts.CraftGossip.com. My mom prides herself on her cake decorating skills. We always had cake from a mix (yellow for my siblings, chocolate for me), with homemade buttercream (chocolate for the sibs, white for me), and decorated with M and Ms.
My favorite birthday cake was the Raggety Anne cake on my 7th b-day - it was really cute and delish also.
This is sooo gorgeous!! I'm not entering the giveaway - but I wanted to comment :). Happy Belated Birthday!
My favorite birthday cake would probably be wacky cake with glossy chocolate frosting. Yummy! I came across your blog thru another and will follow for sure!
My favorite birthday cake is one my mom used to make for me every year, until I moved away from home. It was strawberry, with fresh strawberries of course, and strawberry icing! yum!
My Strawberry Shortcake, cake of course!
My best Birthday cake was when I was seven..my mum spent hours making a doll cake, you remember those with a doll figure inside and the dress was the cake? I ran into my room and cried I was so happy. What I wouldn't do to go back to those times!
Ahh!!! Nothing is worse than losing my comment because I'm not signed in!!! So, here we go again :)
I just found you from The Brown Eyed Baker, she linked to your Coffee Doughnut cake (which is absolutely adorable, might I add) so far I love what I see! I haven't delved too far into your site though because I had to get in on this giveaway action!
I am proud to say I am your newest follower # 980 (wowsa!)
My favorite birthday cake for the last few years has been strawberry shortcake. But not just angel food cake and fresh strawberries. What I like is way more amazing than that! It's a white sheet cake with a creamy cream cheese/whipped cream topping topped with a strawberry glaze w/fresh strawberries. It's pretty much the best thing ever and oh so worthy of being a birthday cake!
Happy Birthday!
I'm already a follower and my favorite Birthday Cake is Ice Cream Cake. Usually one of the regular ones from DQ, but recently I have loved the Cookie Dough and Cake Batter one from Cold Stone. If I was forced to choose.. probably the Cake Batter one from Cold Stone :D LOVE IT!
For my 12th birthday (38 years ago!) my mom made me a bright green guitar out of frosted rice krispie treats. It was total flower power/hippy-chic with long licorice strings and gumdrop tuning keys. Thanks Mom! :)
We used to always have a jello cream cheese cake for my birthday and although there's not cake in it, it is SOOO good!
My favorite birthday cake was the super-chocolate chocolate cake I got for my 13th birthday. It had 4 layers of chocolate cake, which were separated by chocolate ganache. The cake was absolutely covered in chocolate frosting, and it was topped with chocolate shavings! it was sooo rich and delicious.
My favorite birthday cake was a chocolate sheet cake my mom made for me, that looked like a gumball machine, with tinfoil wrapped loonies inside for all my friends and I. Classic!
My favorite birthday cake was my fifth birthday. When I was little I used to suck the royal icing out of the tubs while my mom made decorated the cake. It was chocolate through and through.
My favorite is and always has been chocolate! But I have fond memories of birthday pumpkin pie for my October birthday.
My favorite birthday cake was when I was a kid, Sesame Street...chocolate, caramel, then doused with colorful icing, and big bird elmo oscar and the rest of the gang. it's one of those times that I was so excited to know that the cake was made just for me. By the way, I'm 27 now, and I'd still be psyched to get a Sesame Street cake! ;)
Thanks so much.

My favorite bday cake was a red velvet cake with cream cheese icing that my college roommate's mother made. I've never tasted anything so good!
My favorite birthday cake is an oreo layer cake :) MMMM YUM!
That is sooo awesome! I wish I would have had this recipe in July, my friend wanted the "funfetti" cake for his 21st birthday, I wish I could have made it completely homemade! His 21st theme was "back to childhood" with a funfetti cake, and carebears and such childhood memories. XD
Happy birthday! Funfetti cake is the only box mix cake I actually like. Homemade I'm sure is 100 times better.
I don't remember a standout cake. To be honest I don't remember any of the cakes I might have had for my birthday. I do remember my Dad sending me Carvel's ice cream cakes.
~ingrid
My favorite birthday cake is Chocolate Mayonaise cake with fudge frosting. My mom used to make this for all our birthdays. We didn't eat a lot of sweets, so the cake was a special treat.
My Favorite birthday cake was heart shaped. My birthday is Feb. 12 so my mom always made me a heart shaped cake for my birthday. She did that for 21 years, then gave the pan to my husband when we got married, he makes me a heart shaped cake every year. It's been 30 wonderful years.
Happy 1 year Birthday! I just discovered your blog today and this cake looks amazing! Love all the multi color sprinkles around the outside...what's your trick to getting them to stick to the side of the cake, I've tried this before and had sprinkles all over the place! This recipe looks amazing!
My favorite was a 3 leches cake that was made for my 10th Birthday...
My favorite birthday cake was a cake that I made from my Hersheys Chocolate Cookbook... (not sure of the exact name as it's packed up in a box, in anticipation of closing on my new house, once the bank gets on the ball) it was an Angle Food Cake, where I cut out the middle and put in it homemade chocolate Mousse, frosted with pink frosting made with some whip cream and chocolate shavings. Nummy nummy!
I loved the pink kitten cake my mom made for my 5th birthday. I'm pretty sure all my friends were jealous.
One of my favorite cakes was for my 5th birthday. It was a cowboy and indian theme, and my mom let me help put all sort of little figurines on it.
Just signed up as a follower, although I've been "following" for some time!
My favorite is always a German Chocolate Cake...yum! And this year I got to try an amazing homemade version.
My favorite birthday cake is Martha Washington cake ... it takes forever to prepare; but it's worth it!
Happy Birthday SprinkleBakes!
Beautiful cake by the way. My favorite from when I was a kid was a Napoleon cake from a local bakery. It was essentially a giant Napoleon pastry with frosting on top. So yummy! My favorite as an adult was a strawberry cupcake with strawberry buttercream frosting from a cupcake bakery in Berkeley, CA that my best friend bought for me a few years ago.
I always loved the wonky chocolate rectangles with electric blue icing that my mom made. I hated having to share said cake with my brother (a year and three days older grr)
Happy blog birthday. Great giveaway.
This is an adorable idea. I have loved rainbow sprinkles since I was a little girl. Now my grandson shares my taste. We always go to the ice cream store and we both ask for "lots of sprinkles". He will be 4 in a couple of weeks and I cannot wait until I show him this...inside and out! YEAH!!! I am so excited.
ohmywordthatlooksterrific! i wish i had a birthday cake like that. so deliciously full of sprinkles. yum. (:
My favorite...hhhmm...I still remember to this day a simple strawberry flavored caked with a cream cheese icing that was SO GOOD. Sometimes simple is best :)
My favorite cake was a set of three stand up panda bears (mama and her 2 babies my grandmother made for my 4th birthday.
Happy b-day Heather! Amazing that it's only been a year. Thank you for sharing your beautiful cake, and the sweet video - and thanks for the awesome giveaway!!
My favorite birthday cake was a giant chocolate chip candy covered pizza (really a ginormous cookie) I made for my b-day party when I was 10. My favorite birthday cake that wasn't for me (I made it for my sweetie) was a dark chocolate pavlova with fresh whipping cream, blackberries, and dark chocolate curls. Yum.
although its not fancy or homemade.. i always loved getting a dairy queen cake. there was something about the fudge and crunchies in the middle that i found so delicious!!! i like to try experimenting with my own recipe for something like this!
My favorite birthday cake would be one I actually receive and can eat! Can you believe I've NEVER, EVER had one that I can remember? My parents were divorced when I was quite young and my mother never worried too much about birthdays etc. Sad! I always make sure MY children had birthday cakes and we celebrate every birthday even now that they are all older and out on their own!
Loved your Sprinkles cake tho!
Happy happy birthday! That's a lovely sprinkle cake.
My favorite birthday cake was an ice cream cake made to look like an airplane - I was probably five or so. Yes, I was an unusual little girl!
my fav cake was the one my husband made homemade for me last yr..he doesn't cook/bake so i was impressed
My favorite birthday cake is red velvet with buttercream frosting!
My favorite birthday cake would be a wonderful cheesecake or definitely a carrot cake. I love the two of them equally. So much flavor.

my favorite birthday cake was a Disney princess cake that my 4 year old cousin picked out for my 30th birthday. Clearly she loves princesses! It was so cute.
The only birthday cake I ever recieved was when my brother came home from the Vietnam war and it was my 8th birthday,my dad was drunk and my mama had to work.(my family was totally disfuctional,we wrote the book)! My brother went to the A&P grocery store and bought me a cake,it was the prettiest thing I had ever seen!It had green icing and yellow flowers,I will never forget that cake or what my brother did for me on my 8th birthday. He was the only one that remembered.Thank You,Doug.
Just found your site..My favorite birthday cake was a Strawberry Shortcake cake back in the day! I'm a follower now...on twitter too! @bakedbybeth
yum! that cake looks delicious!!! :)
My favorite birthday cake would have to be a Red Velvet cake with Strawberry Cream Cheese frosting. Also it just wouldn't be right if it wasn't loaded down with candied strawberries and red sparkling sugar sprinkled through out. YUM!
My bday cake was also my christening cake- a chocolate mocha torte with chocolate whipped cream frosting... I'm drooling a little just thinking about it!
I'm going to have to say my favorite birthday cake was for my 14th birthday a million years ago... my mom was trying to be all "hip" and ordered a photo cake, which were still pretty new at the time. It was me and a bunch of my girlfriends at the slumber party fighting over who got what! The cake was chocolate with buttercream frosting and had NKOTB on it :D :D *snicker* I'm a follower of your blog! :D
I am so excited to have found your beautiful blog and the magnificent cake recipe! I am now a follower.
Thanks for the chance to win!
I love stawberry shortcake. I always used to request that for a birthday cake, since my birthday is in May, when strawberries are available. In a close tie, would be carrot cake, which is my ultimate favorite, although perhaps not for a birthday cake.
My favorite birthday cake were these Dinosaur Cupcakes in Kindergarden. I have no idea why but I was obsessed how these cakes tasted particularly the dinosaur sprinkles which makes no sense bc most sprinkles taste the same. Either way I will never forget that tastilicious memory. Happy Bday and ps
FABULOUS BLOG!
I had a Snoopy cake as kid. I loved it!
My favorite birthday cake was a red velvet cake at my surprise 21st birthday party! Reminds me of how greatful I am for my best friends
happy bday! favorite bday cake, the one i made for myself this year w layers of white cake, whipped cream, bananas and chocolate ganache
My favorite birthday cake...hmm it would definitely be my 27th birthday cake. I asked for something awesome from my mom and she totally went all out and made it with marshmallow fondant. It was her first time making anything with fondant, she did a fabulous job and put her all into it! I loved it!
Happy Birthday, Sprinkle Bakes!! My friend introduced me to you blog and I cannot tell you how much I love it (and how many baked goods I owe her, as a result)!
My favorite birthday cake would probably be one that we had for my grandmother's 65th birthday party (and because we share a birthday, mine as well). It was a delicious yellow cake with the prettiest pile of butter cream flowers I have ever seen in purples and pinks. I will never forget that cake, I think.
Such a cute cake!! I've seen the giant gummie bears before, but never thought to use it as a cake topper. It's a great idea!
My favorite birthday cake was my grandmother's cheesecake. When I lived nearby she would make a small cheesecake every year for my birthday. I had to stop myself from eating it all in one sitting! It was made with lemon Jello and something called DreamWhip- it's unlike any cheesecake I've had anywhere else. It was cool and creamy; just perfect for my June birthday. Even now I drool just thinking about it!
My favorite birthday cake is actually the cake I make for my husband... carrot cake with cream cheese frosting!
My favorite birthday cake is any kind of ice cream cake! I absolutely love the blend of cold ice cream with that excellent cookie crumb crust and moist cake!
What a cute cake with the giant gummy bear in the center! I also love the tiny gold edible stars...can u tell me where u bought those? I remember one of my favorite birthday cakes was when I was around 9 or 10; it was a round milk chocolate frosted cake and on the top was a circle of cutout paper dolls that went all the way around the edge of the cake! :)
following :)
My favorite cake is always homemade yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting!
My favorite cake would probably be any cake my grandpa made for me!
I can't remember a specific year's cake to name my favorite, but every year I asked my mom for an angel food cake with strawberries. And every year she would oblige. Thanks, Mom! I think, if I had to name a favorite, I cannot NOT mention the fun I had making my son's first birthday cake - a Disney Cars themed two-tiered fondant covered labor of love! :)
my favorite is a mocha cake my friend baked for me, it had a strong coffee flavor and also sweet enough, it also kept us all awake till 6 in the morning.
My birthday is in the summer and my father always made strawberry shortcake for me. Everytime I eat strawberry shortcake I feel like it is my birthday!
Beautiful cake!! I've had so many fun cakes growing up but my favorite was probably a Strawberry Shortcake cake, with the Strawberry Shortcake characters not the flavor. And I always had marble cake for some reason.
My favorite birthday cake was the one I got to decorate myself when I was 4 at leaps and bounds, a kiddie wonderland of tubes and ball pits. They gave me an entire shaker full of sprinkles to "decorate." Let's just say there weren't many left when I gave it back to them...
My fave was from a local bakery when I was a kid in Ireland, this was the only time of year that a bought cake was in our house, it was light sponge cake, fresh whipped cream, lady fingers, mandarin orange slices and a shiny bow.
My favourite birthday cake is the one my mom makes for me every year, still to this day. How to make a simple white chiffon cake with strawberry jam filling more delectible....frost it with whipping cream and sprinkle with peanut brittle. YUMMM!
I always had the best birthday cakes growing up. My Mom had this huge collection of ideas she would cut out of women's magazines during the 80s. My absolute favorites were cakes that used Teddy Grahams dressed up somehow depending on their scenery. She made a cake to look like a pool with blue icing, the T.G.s had bathing suits frosted on, and there was a ton of yummy edible pool scenery around. I actually think it was on a cover of Women's Day Magazine back in the early 80s. Anyone remember that one? I am 25 now, but I actually had her re-make it for me for my 21st birthday, haha. It was fantastic as the first time!

I always ALWAYS request red velvet with cream cheese frosting. The red velvet really just serves as a vessel for the frosting. We always got to decorate our own cake with sprinkles and colored frosting.
My favorite birthday cake was for my 30th. My husband got me a huge pink hello kitty cake because I am a fan of hello kitty. It was a simple white cake with light whipped frosting. Congrats on your blog!!!
my favorite bday cake was an ice cream cake my mom bought when I was 8 yrs old. oh the memories!
My favorite birthday cake is carrot cake. My best friend made one for my birthday a few years ago.
My birthday cakes were always homemade from scratch. My mom decorated them herself and I loved looking through her Wilton cake "yearbooks" at all of the fun designs. I can't pick just one! I loved them all!
I just entered the contest! I love anything hearts. Also I just "liked" you on Facebook :)
Growing up I never had the privalage of home made birthday cakes, it was alway yucky storebought ones. I do remember one in particular it was decorated with Strawberry Shortcake and friends (the old 80's carton). I was the usual fruit cake center with white cake. Its one of the cakes I remember the most.
My favourite birthday cake involved 6 layers of chocolate meringue made by my darling mother. She left the cake in the fridge on my birthday, and it was so intricate and fancy that I didn't realize that it was for me! I thought that it was for one of her "grown up" dinner parties, and made my own Betty Crocker cake from a box. When she got home from work and told me that the fancy cake was mine, I was so excited!
cherry pie;)
I love the look of your colorful cake and bet it tastes wonderful! I'm now a follower - and my favorite birthday cake was a surprise cake from my mom - carrot cake with cream cheese frosting! From her sister's special recipe.
Linda Harbin - MidwestieLady on Etsy
My favorite birthday cake is either an ice cream cake from Carvel (I love those crumbly things in the center) or my mom's dark chocolate cake with white chocolate buttercream frosting. YUM!!!
So happy to have stumbled upon your adorable blog! My (now grown) daughter, still to this day, requests a "confetti cake" for her birthday cake. While I am always happy to oblige since this is easy to whip up with a mix and canned frosting, I always wish that it could be (in MY opinion) a bit more special a.k.a. home made. Thank you for the wonderful recipe and for decorating it so sweetly! Happy Birthday to your blog...here's to many more birthdays :)
I wish i had had this Birthday cake for mine on the 24th!! Love how it's so festive!
My favorite birthday cake was from when i was 3. My Mom made a strawberry cake with lavendar buttercream but the best part, the My Little Pony she hand piped onto it, the Skittles rainbow with pink cotton candy clouds, along with my birthday message that my Mom put on all of the cakes she has made me... "Hippo Birdies two Ewes!" (One year she even just drew the animals on the cake instead of write it, probably my second favorite!)
I fave cake would have to be vanilla with vanilla buttercream! yummy!!
my favorite was a barbie doll and her dress was the cake, it was amazing!
My favorite birthday cake is of the cheese variety...Yes I know...quite decadent! My mom has made me a cheese cake for the past 18 birthdays, and I do not see an end in sight.
I made someone a pacman cake a few years back. It was my brother-in-law he was only 5 at the time. My favorite cake for my birthday is any thing with chocolate and coconut together. It has been that way for the last 40 years.Thank you for this give away.
My favourite birthday cake was the one my boyfriend made for my 20th birthday last March! It's still the best Tiramisù I've ever had. He put in a lot of work to make it and even made a flow chart of the baking process!
i subscribe through my google reader!
does it have to be my own cake? my favorite bday cake was the one i made for my bf. for some reason i wanted to make him an ice cream hamburger cake. it took several gallons of haagen daz and ben & jerry's ice cream, a lot of poundcake, food coloring and almonds, but i got it done

My mom once made me the most amazing orange cloud cake with fluffy orange frosting. My birthday is in the dead of winter, so the sunny citrus was so wonderful and bright. I haven't been able to find the recipe since then.
My birthday is in mid October, so all of my birthday cakes as a young child were Halloween themed! Guess that's why I love Halloween so much!
My favourite birthday cake was a Wilton stand up bear cake that my sister made. It was gorgeous and delicious and impressed all my fourth grade friends!
White cake with chocolate icing- adorable!
my favorite birthday cake was a carved penguin cake! i love penguins and i love cake so i got the best of both worlds!
My favorite birthday cake will always be the one my grandmother used to make for me - yellow sheet cake with a cooked chocolate fudge frosting that you pour on just like fudge and you can peel it off when it cools! Simple, but wonderful. That said, my favorite cake that I made for my daughter's birthday was the Lisa Frank inspired 3-D cat that I made from a Wilton Easter lamb pan. It had pink and purple "fur" frosting, and really looked like her one of characters. Sadly, the cake "committed suicide" while we were preparing to go to the party (it wasn't balanced properly I guess, and toppled over the edge of the counter and on to the floor...) so I had to hurredly make something else, but it's that cat that my daughter and I remember best!
My favorite was a cake my friend's mom made for my 10th birthday made out of homemade cinnamon rolls! It was delicious!
my 16th birthday cake... homemade by mom. it was a chocolate cake frosted with vanilla buttercream and chocolate buttercream poured in the center that cascaded down the sides. I ate the entire cake in 24hrs... no joke. 24hrs. this is a really dope blog. i stumbled on it a couple of days ago while looking for Blue Velvet Cupcakes... bout to get started on 'em!
My all-time favorite birthday cake was a strawberry shortcake delight. Angel food cake topped drizzled and soaked with strawberry jello, all topped with fresh strawberries and frosted with whipped cream. Delicious!!
My favorite all time Birthday cake comes from my grandmother; an Italian Cream Cake! Yummy!!
My favorite cake was the Cookies N' Cream birthday cake my friend made from scratch. It was way better than any in store or bag cake I've ever had, especially with the use of the fresh cream. I also kind of like the cookies only on the frosting part and the cake being left simple and plain.
I love the gummy bear topping...how fun! It must take days to eat something like that.
That cake looks delicious. Everything you make is so visually stunning, and I think your cookbook will be a hit. As a kid, I was obsessed with the airy frosting on store-bought cakes, but my mom felt buying a cake was so impersonal. So, she made similar airy frosting and colored it all these funky colors. It was fun. Although, I think that cake may have been beat by the Chocolate Sour Cream cake she surprised me with on my birthday back in August.
Every year for each of our birthdays, my mom makes me and my brothers a chocolate chip cookie cake cut out in the shape of the age we're turning. She has a picture from each year and it's my favorite family tradition!
My favorite birthday cake would definitely be the Jewellery Box cake my mom made me for my 7th b-day!
Black forest cake was my faviourite when I was a kid!
My favourite birthday cakes were a white sheet cake with pink & white icing and silver dragees that my nana made me when I was four--and tied with that, the hula-girl cake my sister made me. I always wanted one of those cakes with a Barbie doll in it, where the dress is cake, and I finally got it...when I turned 35. My sister is the best!
First of all the cake is adorable and both my kids have now asked me to abandon cupcakes and make it! My birthday is Halloween so I often got a pumpkin pie, but every now and again I'd get a butter cake with chocolate frosting in the shape of a pumpkin with candy corn decorations. Still makes me smile.
Hi
My favourite birthday cake was a Chocolate Fudge cake on my 21st birthday. It was to die for type of chocolate cake.
Happy Birthday to you !
Thank you for the giveaway = )
Blessings
Christine
Happy Birthday, Sprinkle Cakes! OMGosh! This giveaway makes my heart say, "OOOOOOOOH!" My favorite shape is heart shaped and my favorite cooking vessel is LeCruset. A match made in -- ANY oven! My favorite birthday cake is a milk chocolate cake, with vanilla buttercream frosting, baked in a heart shaped pan, decorated with baby pink roses and kissed by a small decorating tip that leaves "dots" on the sides of the cake. I have this cake EVERY year, October 9th, on my birthday.
my favourite birthday cake was a barbie cake that was made for me for my 4th birthday! she was dressed in a pretty pink dress was too pretty to eat!
Oh my goodness, this is the cutest cake of all time! Funfetti used to be my birthday cake of choice and my mom made it every year. I'm so excited that there is a homemade version, eek!
My favourite birthday cake is pound cake with butter cream icing.......love it.
The best birthday I ever had was the year my mom made both a dragon shaped cake AND a 3D ice cream cake. It was epic.
My favorite as a kid was Butterbrickle cake! It was made with a mix that doesn;t exist anymore :( So now I'd go with Lemon or Carrot cake

I always ask for funfetti cakes. I love them to pieces (I'm almost 30, fyi)
This year, the boxed funfetti cake fell apart when she tried to turn it out of the pan. She didn't grease it well enough. So she was forced to run out and get a backup ice cream cake. But those have gotten very expensive in recent years. So instead of the traditional birthday cake, I had a DQ Ice Cream log, which mom decorated with purple sprinkles. It was kind of odd, but tasted good anyway. :)
Hi Heather, happy 1 year birthday! I just spent several days browsing all of your archives, and I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blog. It's beautiful! I wrote a post about it on my own blog, and included a few of your delicious pictures. Hopefully my (two) readers will enjoy your blog as much as I do. Cheers!
P.S. Let me know if I didn't credit the pictures in the correct way... it's the first time I've done that.
Favorite birthday cake was a Barnie cake - 3rd birthday! Just found your website via Drop Dead Kawaii - oh goddess so many fun recipes! Time to follow (^_^)
My favorite birthday cake was the one my mom made for my 4th birthday. It was a lady bug cake that she had decorated with all different types of candy. The cake was so cute and absolutely delicious! It was one of the last homemade birthday cakes she made.
i'm not able to enter the contest, but i wanted to tell you about my best birthday cake EVER! my boyfriend made me a trifle cake! 2 vic. sponges with bright blue icing on top - separated by a PERFECT layer of blue jelly!! (i should say "jello") and my favourite japanese sweets (konpeito) for sprinkles :D
it was epic.
Ok, so Im fairly positive that Im not obsessed with your website! This cake is so ridiculously adorable, i can barely stand it!! I have a cupcake blog "Stay Calm, Have a Cupcake" (www.fontgirl.wordpress.com0 fee; free to stop on over and offer any suggestions. Can't wait to read more of your blog.
Where can I buy that heart shaped pot?
what a perfectly fitting cake!!! and what fab sprinkles! as per usual, amazing! can't wait to see what you whip up next :)
I love the cake!
I was wondering what kind of sprinkles you can put IN the cake. Do you have to use Jimmies? because I have two big bottles of Nonpareils in my cupboard and I was wondering if I used those in my cake, will it effect the texture of the cake?
Just discovered your blog,am in heaven. Reading all of it. This cake looks delicious. Love your food photography!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this cake!! :) It's so sweet and simple! Amazing.
How long do you think this cake can hold? And how should I store it?
This cake looks absolutely amazing! We're going out of town for my friends birthday and I really want to make it for her... Do you think it will still be good after a day and a half (untouched)?
Preheat oven to 375 ° F with rack in the middle. Grease a 9 inch square cake.
Mix together the flour, baking soda and salt.
Beat together softened butter (1 stick) and 3 / 4 cup sugar in medium bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until pale and fluffy, then add the eggs 1 at a time until well blended. Add bananas, yogurt and vanilla (mixture will look curdled).
I'm curious, how did you sprinkle the sides of the cake? this might be a silly question. I guess rolling the cake in sprinkles is out of the question, do you just shake the sprinkles onto the side and they stick? Also, can you recommend a different frosting as I don't have a candy thermometer, maybe something simpler? Thank you!
A) pug owner, b) sprinkle lover.
= I LOVE YOU. Omg. Following and making!
love love love your blog.
Where does one buy those glorious gold star decorations?
Hi Heather, maybe a silly question, but how do you put sprinkles on the sides of a cake? Do you throw them on, roll the cake, cover wax paper w/sprinkles and press it to the sides? If I use my palm- it always looks sloppy. Any tips? (btw- love your book- going to attempt the bombe cake for father's day :) )
I wanted to let you know. I used your photo of you pug and cake as a Birthdaycard for my little sister, because she loves pugs. I hope it's okay. I've told her it's from your blog.>.<
And I love you cake, it's so damn awesome. Big Love. <3
Has anyone tried this recipe for cupcakes? Think it'll turn out the same/ok?
